Lesson Description:
Today, we're releasing our first physics lecture in Fluid Mechanics, which focuses on some preliminary ideas and the Reynolds Transport Theorem. So, when you get a chance, check out the video and let us know what you think about it. Since this is the first video in the series, there is a bunch of content here, but it's a ton of valuable information that will get you acquainted with the subject. In the future, the plan is to have shorter videos that focus directly on specific topics; let us know what you think of the current content delivery and structure though.
In this lesson, the main goal is to establish some preliminary ideas and then use them to derive the Reynolds Transport Theorem (RTT). First, the advantages/disadvantages associated with different analytical approaches are explored, and then the rest of the video/lesson focuses on a control volume analysis. For this reason, distinctions are made between systems/boundaries and a control volume, and the main idea driving the RTT is to relate control volume and system properties. Doing so will allow us to apply the nice conservation laws in solid mechanics - such as conservation of mass, momentum, and energy - directly to a control volume in fluid mechanics.
